Rome
founded on seven hills in 753 BC by Romulus who was the
first of Rome’s seven kings was the capital of the
Roman Empire, and was the world center of the Roman Catholic
church. Now it is the capital of the Italy since 1871.In
Rome there is also the independent Vatican State.
Rome
is 25 km. far from the seaside and has excellent railway
and road connections with most of the main Italian cities.
Rome has an average altitude of 20 meters on the sea level,
and is bordered on the west with the Tirreno coast and
on the east with the Appennines. Its temperature is between
5° C and 15° C in the winter and between 20°
C and 30° C during the summer.
Rome has two main international airports : the Leonardo
da Vinci or Fiumicino that is 30 km. southwest and the
other airport is Ciampino, 15 Km. southeast. Rome has
a key role in the creative arts. It has 20 theaters and
6 major concert halls.
There
are also a lot of historical places: Etruscan tombs, Republican
meeting rooms, Imperial temples, early Christian churches,
medieval bell towers, Renaissance palaces and baroque
basilicas.
Two famous squares are Piazza Navona and Piazza della
Rotonda which is also known as Piazza del Pantheon. You
can walk on Piazza del Pantheon , see the The Pantheon,
a temple dedicated to all the gods. It is possible to
listen to the street singers.
If you visit Piazza Navona you can see a fountain by Bernini,
and a church by Borromini. Other places are Sant’Angelo’s
Castle with its perfect panoramic view , The Borgo, with
its old palaces and streets, is known as the “Citadella”
and Celio which is in the centre of the town and is the
most ancient area of Rome you could spend a week looking
at all her beauties and learning about her history.
